Summer Break, But You're Still Tired

Mental Health Tips for Parents Running on Empty
Let’s be honest—“summer break” is a lie. It sounds relaxing in theory: warm breezes, family barbecues, spontaneous beach days. In reality? It’s summer camp timelines, sandy shoes, snack runs, overpacked calendars, and WHY do kids back away when you’re trying to put their sunscreen on?!
And after barely surviving the end-of-school-year graduations, plays, and ceremonies, this just feels like a lot. Summer, in reality, is your new second job - with worse hours and fewer breaks (but maybe occasionally a popsicle in the mix).
By the time National Self-Care Day (July 24) rolls around? You’re counting down the days until school starts back up like it’s a national holiday.
If you’re a parent who feels like they’re running on fumes, this is your sign: it’s time to pause, breathe, and reclaim even a sliver of summer for you.
Self-Care That's Realistic (and Doesn't Require a Spa Day)
You don’t need a silent retreat or a color-coded calendar to take care of yourself. You need real strategies that fit into the chaos of parenting.
Try these small but mighty shifts:
Take the morning walk. The good thing about summer is that the kids refuse to get out of bed until you drag them out by their feet. So before you do that, take a walk. Even 15 minutes along the beach, the bay, or a shaded trail can reset your nervous system before the chaos begins.
Shut the bathroom door. Yes, it's basic. But 3 minutes alone with a deep breath and no questions about snacks counts as meditation.
Say no more often. They may have come home with summer bucket lists, and you may have a goal to accomplish all the fun things to make this the best summer ever. But you can also sometimes just say no. You don’t need to host the cousins, organize the block party, and pack for camp today. Try it - just say NO today.
Stay hydrated. Coffee isn’t water (sorry), and half your stress headaches are probably thirst-related. The rest are likely due to tension and heat exhaustion, but first - try water.
Make plans without your kids. Hey - this is your summer too! Don’t forget that! Let your partner, friend, or mother-in-law tag in while you go to a yoga class, go shopping, or even just sit in your car in silence. Make plans to have some noise-free time.
Limit your scroll time. The perfect Pinterest mom is tired too. She just has better filters.
Local Self-Care Resources Around Cape May County
Here are a few ways to sneak in moments of calm without leaving the Shore:
Beach walks: Early morning in Avalon, Stone Harbor, or Cape May Point is peaceful and less crowded.
Nature trails: Hit the Cape May County Park & Zoo walking path for a quiet, shady, and peaceful loop for walking or biking.
Fitness fixes: Local gyms like Surfside Fitness, Cape May Fitness, or Planet Fitness offer classes and air conditioning—bliss.
Group movement: Check out 3206 Fitness (Avalon), CrossFit Parallax (Ocean View), or Punch King Boxing if you need to hit something that isn’t your beach chair.
Library visits: Cool, quiet, and kid-friendly. Let them explore while you sneak a chapter in your own book.
Farmer's markets: Grab fresh produce, listen to live music, and feel like you’ve “done something” without breaking a sweat. Sea Isle City, Stone Harbor, and West Cape May all offer weekly Farmer’s Market events.
